Obey or feel the wrath of Alphonsus.. The world is still full of crazy fuckers. My guardian angel joined the militia. I open my paper , and there in blackink, Alphonsus will get you, Obey little girl... Alphonsus will get you... Obey or feel the wrath of Alphonsus..

Watching the mould grow, hearing the paint peel, you remember your first car. Little wheels, tiny pedals , custom made , to get you out of there. Putting a mat over the hole in the floor, you recall a grand tour. Leaving the mill, to see how far you need to go, to get out of there. To get out of there...... To get out of where ?

The long train of misery pulled out at 9pm bound for christmas day... Presents ,wrecks and friends, rush to stake their claim , as we lurch into the night Silos block the moon, their shadows cross my face, morning won't come too soon... My carriage awaits , devils overtake, their asses sit with force, my kingdom ...for a horse! Smokers file past, grimly taking to their task, to speed the inevitable. Ahead the flashing past, it signals it's approach, death where is your sting ! My carriage awaits, devils overtake, their asses sit with force, my kingdom...for a horse ! Silos block the moon, their shadows cross my face , morning won't come too soon...

Men say..... Men say that we We don't possess a taste for , for the abyss The irresistable urge to jump... into the void Well I must be, I must be a man, as it calls out to me.. To dive ,into its depths, 25 leagues below middle C. Men say..... Men say that we We don't possess a taste for , for the abyss The ground opens up, he follows you in, dank and sweet, the dark closes in... what then..what now...whatever ?

One sip and I knew I wouldn't get drunk that night. The bells rang ,the wind blew and I had a lot to drink about. She was back in town, fear reigned, worlds collided, hearts sank, What would be left once she'd moved on? My cracked lips sting, and I've got a lot to drink about last time I saw her she was wearing something of mine. She finds some john in a bar, "hey little lady,I'm gonna buy you a drink, what do you think about that ?" Well the drink didn't touch the sides and neither did he as he fell into her pit. My cracked lips sting, and I've got a lot to drink about last time I saw her she was wearing something of mine. One day the heat got too hot, the wind moved on and the bells rang in another part of her world.. all that was left were her boots... I tried them on for size... The tiles cracked under my heels.. Hey sunshine, lay down, I'm gonna walk all over you ! My cracked lips sting, and I've got a lot to drink about, last time I saw her she was wearing something of mine. My cracked lips sting and I've got a lot to drink about next time she sees me I'll be wearing something of hers.

Dads sunburnt arm sticks out the car We swelter in the back as we watch our toys blow from the roof of the Holden station wagon leaving a trail of fun we'll never have again along the road to our lovely holiday at Fearless Freds Shack You pass by Mt Disappointment just beyond the abbatoir turn right at the gypsum mine try not to breathe in for a time.. The road then turns into dirt track ending at the local tip but then you will have to turn back you've gone past Fearless Freds Shack That night just after having tea the outside dunny collapsed on Geraldine the mirror fell on me while sleepwalking Ruthie caused world war three by waking Denis up he nearly called the cops he was convinced you see she was a gang of thieves Denis slept upon a stretcher bought there by the rubbish collector woke the next day covered in bites as his bed was full of mites Helen got bit on the knee by some creature of the sea we should have taken Freds advice always apply No Burn No Bite! As if that wasn't all too much fun Mum drove us to the town to watch a picture show while some charming fellow siphoned off all our gas leaving just enough to almost make it back through the dark fields of scary cows to Fearless Freds Shack Unfortunately Patrick Moore Missed out on all the fun which must leave him forlorn but he was not yet born!!

about

Released in 2005 on cd as a double with Dave Graney - "HASHISH and LIQUOR" . Available here as a standalone digital album.
from the original pr "Evil nuns, female explorers, burlesque dancers, corporate criminals, the abyss, the void, childhood family holidays , alcohol, cats, bees, bete noirs , meeting phantoms from the past…on a night train to hell…these are the stuff of which, lyrically , " liquor" is made of. The album is subtitled "a taste of the abyss" ( le gout de gouffre) in response to a quip by a french philosopher who explained the dearth of female adventurers and explorers by saying that women in general lacked " a taste for the abyss".
Out of this Clare Moore started to write her album of fiercely female tales of explorations of the deep. She knows no fear. Punk.
Musically rich, the album veers from the garage punk of "the town bike song" to the subterranean, other worldly funk of "a taste of the abyss". There is also the swinging, big band, horn driven tale of " a lot to drink about" and the art disco sounds favoured in " alphonsus will get you" ( Alphonsus being the name given to her trusty cane by an evil nun) and "out of where". Along the way there are touches of Noel Coward and Gilbert and Sullivan, sci fi themes and her long running fondness for telling stories with sound effects ( see the effected reprise of "Fearless Freds Shack" and the actual Adelaide to Melbourne steam engine at the end of "The long train of misery").
Clare Moore writes her songs on the piano but pays great attention to the beat, having spent so much time driving bands from the prow of the goodly drum kit. The piano is turned into organs and mellotrons and, most distinctively, that mixture of rhythm and harmony found in the instruments grouped together as tuned percussion. She mistressfully uses the vibraphone and the marimba as well as all kinds of shakers and cowbells and and tambourines.
There is a lot happening in Clare Moore tunes. It is not a kind of music that springs from a deep study of plain old rock music, ( or its inbred , rickets wracked cousin, alt rock) . She has let her ears stray to many areas of jazz, r&b, country, pop, and rap music. She is also a female musician who has made her life as an instrumentalist first and is only recently coming to the world of songwriting and thematic arrangement. She has stuff to say. This is her second solo album. She has been involved in the production and performance of about twenty others."
